Egypt telecom magnate sparks furore with veil comments

December 19th, 2007

Yet another Christian moron makes his crass remarks about the hijab, or the veil in Islam.

Comments by Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris on the Islamic headscarf have sparked a heated debate on freedom of speech and prompted a conservative sheikh to issue a fatwa urging Muslims to boycott Sawiris’ companies.

The businessman, who ranks among the world’s 100 richest men, had criticised the growing influence of religion, such as the Islamic hijab, or veil, worn by women in the street.

“I have the impression of being in Iran. I feel like a foreigner,” he said last month.

Naturally, it has sparked a backlash from the Muslims in Egypt. Kudos goes to our Muslim brothers and sisters in Egypt for standing up and rising against this outrageous comment.

That sparked a torrent of reactions culminating in a fatwa on Monday by Sheikh Yussef al-Badri, famous for his fervent and furious religious edicts, urging all Muslims to boycott Sawiris’ companies, which include Mobinil, the leading Egyptian mobile company.

In the two-page edict obtained by AFP, Badri accused Sawiris, 53, a Coptic Christian, of belonging to a group of non-Muslims who provoke Muslims by “giving statements that show how they really feel about Islam and its people.”

The issue of the hijab and Islam has of course been dealt with elsewhere, so there is no need to repeat myself. Of course it is truly ironic when you see Christian assholes shooting off their mouth like that. It just goes to show that they themselves do not know their own Babble.

Specifically, this passage:

“For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.” (1 Corinthians 11:6)

Of course you do not see Christians practicing that these days *snicker* but hey, who am I to tell them to follow their own religion?
