Malaysian Chinese Muslims must be involved

February 5th, 2008

I was reading about San Diego nightlife when I came across an interesting article by Maszlee Malik, entitled “Cina Muslim dan Peta Politik Malaysia” (Chinese Muslims and the Malaysian Political Map), Majalah i, August 2007 issue, which does gives some interesting suggestions for Chinese Muslims to be involved and be well-known in mainstream politics in Malaysia. There is a serious dearth of Chinese Muslims involved in Malaysian politics, and the only individuals that I know who are actively involved from the Chinese Muslim community are Ann Wan Seng and Haji Anuar Tan Abdullah.

There are at least a few hundred thousand Chinese Muslims in the country and the community is growing every day. The leaders of the Chinese Muslim community should take a more proactive stand to get themselves more involved in the affairs of the country. In the same article, Maszlee Malik gives several suggestions on how this problem, or what I see as “political apathy” among Chinese Muslims, can be addressed. The most tenable of these suggestions being that Chinese Muslim leaders should be more involved in community work. I believe efforts towards that are slowly being done through organisations such as MACMA.
